Court Reporting Services Going Greener

OK, the title really isn’t a very good use of grammar, but we thing it tells it all.

Green Court Reporting Services in Calgary and Edmonton AlbertaAs you have read here before, Calgary and Edmonton Independent Reporters was certified Green by the NNRC Green Commission in May, 2009. IR is the only certified green court reporting company in Alberta, and as far as we know, in Canada.

Well, we are about to get even greener. Starting in January, 2012, IR will start testing 100% recycled paper. Currently we are using 30% recycled paper. This is a HUGE change in working to reduce our environmental footprint.

The move to 100% recycled paper means that we will contribute even less waste and reduce emissions even more by switching from 30% to 100% recycled. For each ream, 500 sheets, of 100% recycled paper, this is how much less waste we are contributing:

  • Trees Cut – 0
  • Solid waste saved – 1kg
  • Recycled manufacturing waste – 25%
  • Chlorine bleaching – 0% used
  • Water saved – 116 litres
  • Air emissions saved – 3kg

And this is just for each ream of paper. Based on our average monthly volume of 45,000 pages printed, we can multiply these numbers by 90 to see our savings. Then multiply that by 12 for the year and you get the idea that this is a large reduction.

But the even bigger way that you can work with IR to create even less waste is to make your next order of our court reporting services a green order. This means you will only receive electronic files, no paper at all, and save $15 per witness you order green, plus, no delivery costs! Just let our court reporter know at your next discovery and you will not only help to save the impact on the environment, but you will also save money. Currently about 25% of our clients receive green orders on every discovery.  In 2012 our goal is to get to 50%.

Schedule your next court reporting services by calling:

- Edmonton – 780.488.1464

Court Reporting and Social Media

Like it or not, social media is here to stay. It seems that pretty much everyone you know has a link to social media in some way.  With that, we wanted to have a look and see how much this affects the court reporting industry and lawyers. Before we do that, here is an interesting page of information that will show you just how powerful the influence of social media is in our lives today.  To prove that statement, take a look at this image below.

Court Reporters & Social MediaThis image shows you how, in the last 30 seconds that this was taken, just how much has been happening in the world of social media. We borrowed this information from Personalize Mediahttp://www.personalizemedia.com/garys-social-media-count/.  You can also go and have a look to see other segments of time and just what is happening anytime.

The three key social media items that you may have heard about are:

- Facebook
- Twitter
- LinkedIn

Facebook and Twitter are pretty common in the general population while LinkedIn is more popular in the world of business as a networking tool.  The new kid on the block is Google+.  As of the writing of this article Google+ is only available by invitation, but is expected to become mainstream soon. This writer was lucky enough to receive an invite when Google+ first came out and, I will say, I prefer it over Facebook.

However, it seems that court reporting companies and law firms have been slow to join the revolution, if we can call it that. For law firms, one of the biggest reasons we have been told is that partners at the firm are worried about offering advice online and issues that may arise because of that.  Instead, what we have seen, is that Canadian law firms do have a presence on Facebook, but with very limited information about the firm.  Some only have what is already noted on Wikipedia.

We have seen that law firms seem to use Twitter much more than they use Facebook.  The law firms that we saw that have a very limited presence on Facebook seem to be much more active on Twitter.  There is still no legal advice that is tweeted about, but instead articles that may be of interest are noted with a link back to the web site for that law firm.  Law Firms also have more of a presence on LinkedIn, but seem to have limited usage of it other than the posting of members of their firm and areas of practice.

Court reporting firms also seem to have a limited presence on Facebook, even the owners of this blog!  While that is about to soon change, we wanted to see what your thoughts on using Facebook as a business tool would be.

Would you look to information posted on Facebook versus going to the web site of Independent Reporters?  We know that Facebook allows an easier way to quickly post items and get information out quickly to followers, but would you use that? We’re really curious, so let us know.  We’d love to hear from you.  Oh, and if you want to read more to understand how everyone is connected in the word of social media, an excellent read is Six Pixels of Separation by Mitch Joel.

Realtime Court Reporting Services

Realtime court reporting services offers lawyers a key advantage in a deposition setting, and that is the ability to view the live testimony of a witness in real time on your own computer screen as it is being written by the court reporter.

Realtime Court Reporting Services | Calgary | Edmonton

Providing realtime court reporting services requires a court reporters who is well trained in this area. So, you ask, aren’t all court reporters trained?

No, not really for providing realtime services.  Most court reporters are trained to provide a verbatim transcript, but very few have any additional training that allows clients to truly enjoy the benefits of using realtime services. There is a small percentage of court reporters who can properly provide realtime services. The key reason for this is additional training and the time that it takes for a court reporter needs to undertake over the course of a few years to ensure that what they are writing is useable to a lawyer in a live proceeding.

IR’s experience in realtime services is unmatched by any other court reporting company in Calgary or Edmonton. With over 500,000 pages of realtime services provided to the legal community since 1992, we have led our industry and continue to evolve and enhance the services we provide our clients.

At IR, we have a team of court reporters who specialize in realtime court reporting services. They have worked on their skills for many years and have been trained to write at a constant level of 98.5% true accuracy.

So, why should you consider using realtime in your examinations?  Here’s a list of things to consider:

Instant access to the testimony and the ability to go back and search earlier testimony – LIVE! By using realtime you can have the testimony quickly accessible at any time during the day, not just reading what is on your screen. You can immediately review what has been said rather than asking the court reporter for a readback.  As well, you can review at a break or at lunch the exact testimony instead of relying on your recollection of the testimony or cryptic notes you made during the proceedings. Really, how fast can you write anyway?

Strategy and confidence in knowing that everything being said is right in front of you and can be easily retrieved at any time throughout the day.  This can put the witness or other counsel on the defensive and let them know that you’re in charge of the room.

Improved comprehension of the testimony. Various studies have shown that when one is reading AND hearing testimony that their comprehension of the testimony increases dramatically. This can result in time savings when questioning a witness as it can avoid repeating of questions and also allow you to be more direct to the areas that are important to your case. This also helps to ensure that you get the answers that you need from your questions now and not before it is too late.

Ability to flag key testimony during the questioning of a witness is crucial. Realtime allows you to mark the live testimony so that you can quickly jump back to it or search for it during the day. Another advantage of this is that opposing counsel will never know what you are marking as it can be done very discretely.

View the realtime testimony anywhere in the world. Yes, you really can. Let’s say you are travelling and you want to maximize your time away from the office and get examination for this key witness dealt with as efficiently as possible. One way is to have a realtime stream sent back to your home office so that another lawyer or your support staff can view the live testimony and provide you with additional points to put to the witness. Or, do you even need to attend the examination of this witness in the first place? Are you only attending so that you can know what the other parties are examining on? id you know that you don’t even have to be at the deposition to view the realtime feed?  You can even send secure instant messages to other remote attendees in your group without other counsel knowing. This technology can save considerable time and money by reducing the need for everyone involved to attend in person and allows for improved collaboration among members of a team handling the litigation.

Many people don’t use realtime because they don’t understand the technology, think that it is too expensive or they find it to be distracting. However, when looking at the benefits that realtime offers, shouldn’t you consider how much more and comprehensive information you could be getting in your future examinations?

Contact IR for a personal demonstration and learn how easy it is to start using realtime in your future examinations. You can click here to book online and schedule your next file with realtime.
